What Canada Is Doing Is Abhorrent

The topic of human euthanasia is a very controversial one, to say the very least. Supreme Court Justice Neil Gorsuch published a book in 2006 titled The Future of Assisted Suicide and Euthanasia, where he criticizes the practice from both a legal and moral standpoint. Personally, I think that if somebody who is mentally capable has a terminal illness, then I do not see an issue with them deciding to end their life on their own term a couple of months earlier than it would otherwise end outside of their control anyway. However, I also realize that reasonable minds can differ on this issue — that’s why I do not think that lawmakers should have a place in determining if this occurs.

With that said, I also realize that such a thing can be used ominously, and Canada has certainly crossed into that territory. Back in May, news broke that people in Canada were requesting euthanasia not because they have a terminal illness, but because they’re too poor to continue living. A 5/11/2022 article from The Guardian with the headline “Are Canadians being driven to assisted suicide by poverty or healthcare crisis?” talks about the story, where two people who are both disabled and unable to work have gone through the assisted suicide process, one of whom had succeed the other was almost finished with the legal process at the time. Both of which had also asked the Canadian government for better living…
