Trump’s Protectionist Policy Hurts The United States Regardless Of How You View Tariffs

Yesterday, the president dropped yet another bombshell through Twitter. This time, regarding a new tax increase for the American people.

On June 10th, the United States will impose a 5% Tariff on all goods coming into our Country from Mexico, until such time as illegal migrants coming through Mexico, and into our Country, STOP. The Tariff will gradually increase until the Illegal Immigration problem is remedied, at which time the Tariffs will be removed. Details from the White House to follow.

This statement has about a million things wrong with it, but I’ll go through the general things in a minute. For now, I’ll just note most illegal immigrants come from Asia and South Africa and not Mexico. Not only that, but 42% of illegal immigrants come through air travel and are on overstayed visas. This means close to a majority of illegal immigrants came here legally and never had to set foot on Mexican soil to enter the United States.

Today, he tried to explain this protectionist policy in more detail:

In order not to pay Tariffs, if they start rising, companies will leave Mexico, which has taken 30% of our Auto Industry, and come back home to the USA. Mexico must take back their country from the drug lords and cartels. The Tariff is about stopping drugs as well as illegals!

So the president will make the Mexican economy worse, which will give Mexican citizens more incentive to come to the United States. It has been consistently found that immigrants come to the United States for economic opportunity, not simply to sell drugs or commit white genocide like the president seems to think. This is why immigration from poor countries such as Mexico went down after the recession in 2008. A similar trend can be seen after the economic collapse that occurred in the 1920s and continued for all the 1930s and half of the 1940s.

Here is a simple fact: If more people wish to leave there original country and move to yours, that’s a good thing on your end. This means your government gains tax revenue and an economic boom is created. This also means the native government of the person is denied tax revenue and must change its policies or else risk a collapse.

This means if the economy works the way Trump thinks it does, his policies will only increase illegal immigration from Mexico.

However, he’s the worst part: The economy does not work the way Trump thinks it does. All this will do is slow down United States commerce and cause the United States to be worse off. This means the only way this could make illegal immigration stop, is if this makes the United States economy worse than Mexico. Basically, he wants us to become a “shithole country.”

If this is America First, consider me out.
