Trump Grifters Control The Republican Party

In less than a month, Virginia is going have their 2021 Gubernatorial Election where Democrat Terry McAuliffe goes up against Republican Glenn Youngkin. McAuliffe is the former governor of Virginia as well as the former head of the Democratic National Committee, while Youngkin is the former co-CEO of The Carlyle Group who has never held elected office before.

Of course, McAuliffe is leading in all the polls at the moment and this, combined with the fact that Joe Biden won Virginia by over ten points and that Virginia has voted Democrat in every Presidential Election since 2008 should mean that Youngkin understands he has to run a moderate campaign if he has any chance of winning — instead, he’s going all in for Donald Trump. He has earned an endorsement from Donald Trump, along with far-right ideologues Steve Bannon and Greg Abbott.

The last Republican governor Virginia elected was Bob McDonnell in 2009, who governed as a moderate. As National Review writer Rich Lowry pointed out at the time:

One of the campaign’s favorite talking points is that 90 percent of the legislation McDonnell proposed as attorney general passed the assembly with strong bipartisan support.
