Outside of Israel, the nation the early Trump Administration has been the most interested in influencing through its foreign policy is South Africa. Although the future of Ukraine after its Russian invasion is not a concern of the United States, the President firmly believes a dispute regarding property rights in South Africa must be a top priority.

The situation revolves around attempts by the South African government to undo the historic wrongs of Apartheid, a system the nation was under from 1948 until 1994 which saw segregation between the black majority and the white minority, with said white minority coming out on top. A 10/27/2017 article from The New York Times notes that the system still has many lasting effects regarding the South African population, arguing that “Apartheid has essentially persisted in economic form.” It does acknowledge that many gains were made for the black population of South Africa during the first several years of the post-Apartheid nation, but the economic meltdown of 2008 caused the nation to revert to its status quo, essentially putting it back where it started.
