The United States Should Not Be A Theocracy, Even When The Theocracy Is Anti-Trump
Even though I hate Donald Trump — and make no mistake, I really do hate Donald Trump — that does not mean I plan to sit by and pretend every criticism of him is valid, especially when said criticisms see those opposed to Trump acting like the same conservatives the anti-Trump movement should be fighting against. Pat Buchanan’s 1992 Presidential Campaign — which many have seen as an early example of Trump’s rhetoric being used — began specifically because of conservative dislike towards the first George Bush, with the main example being Bush backing down on his famous “no new taxes” promise. However, liberal commentators who pointed out Bush’s contradiction ended up playing into the hands of people like Buchanan, showing that a base for his ideas exist, and leading directly to the rise of Donald Trump. This is not to say that leftists should stop saying true things out of fear they might end up serving people who are even more to the right than Trump, but the topic of picking battles needs to be one discussed going forward.
On 1/21/2025, a Bishop by the name of Mariann Budde gave a sermon during the National Prayer Service where she criticized Donald Trump to his face, specifically asking him to “have mercy” on immigrants, LGBTQ people, and refugees — with the implication being he wasn’t already planning…
