The Only Long Term Solution To Religious Bigotry Is Atheism
This article is dedicated to Kevin Temmer, who posted a meme making fun of the recent controversy over the Pixar movie Lightyear including a lesbian kiss scene that saw Squidward from Spongebob Squarepants saying the following:
Of course, I agree with this notion — but that’s primarily because I do not believe that an omniscient deity exists. If I were a Christian — and since Christians are the main source of backlash regarding Lightyear, it makes sense to use them as an example — I would find this claim to be downright laughable. Just checking Genesis, the first book of The Bible, we can find that this deity flooded the Earth, forced a group that he called “his people” to walk around the desert for forty years because they worshipped a golden cow, and destroyed the city of Sodom.
The destruction of Sodom is typically cited by homophobic Christians as the main reason for their opposition to homosexuality, the story is also referenced in some Islamic civilizations as a reason to keep laws against homosexuality in Sharia. Personally, I am not a Christian nor a Muslim so I do not feel it is my place to dictate what those groups should actually believe — but I will say the concept of Sodom…
