Some People Have Too Much Money
I was at Petco a couple of months ago to pick up food for my dad’s dog. Although I was unable to find anything that was actually affordable and worth buying, I did leave with the knowledge of a product that has been in my head ever since: Organic dog food.
I should note, I have a massive bias against organic food — and have hated the anti-GMO crowd who eats it since the Golden Rice controversy — but that’s not why this stuck in my head. Instead, it’s the fact that, in the same country where almost fourteen million people are food insecure, people are buying organic food for their dogs. Not only that, but enough of them exist for this product to be sold at a Petco in Ohio. It would be one thing if this were some upper-class pet store in a wealthy area — but this was the most basic pet store in a fairly poor state.
Of course, this is far from the only expenditure the wealthy waste their money on. In California, you can actually buy bacon flavored liquid marijuana for the purpose of treating dog anxiety. Meanwhile, a woman recently spent twenty-five thousand dollars to clone her cat — and was surprised when she learned that this new cat would not have the same personality as the one the cat was cloned from.
I should note, I’m not calling for any of these things to be prohibited — if people truly have the money to waste on these endeavors and…
