Former President Donald Trump has officially endorsed J.D. Vance for the Senate seat from Ohio. Considering Vance is not even the most unapologetically pro-Trump candidate in the race — that honor would go to Josh Mandel — this endorsement certainly surprised a lot of people. Especially considering the fact that Vance was not even a Trump supporter in 2016 — but Mandle was, as he brags about constantly.

Mind you, Vance’s non-support for Trump in 2016 is well known by this point, as is the fact that he voted for the much more establishment Evan McMullin in the 2016 Presidential Election. (McMullin is currently running for Senate in Utah against Mike Lee as an independent.) However, Vance’s pure hatred of Donald Trump was not fully known until a text message from 2016 was leaked, where he said the following:

But I’m not surprised by Trump’s rise, and I think the entire party has only itself to blame. We are, whether we like it or not, the party of lower-income, lower-educated white people, and I have been saying for a long time that we need to offer those people SOMETHING (and hell, maybe expand our appeal to working class black people in the process) or a demagogue would.
