Republicans Created This Beast, Now Either They Leave Or They Enable (“Legitimate Political Discourse” 3)
Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell has condemned the censure of Liz Cheney and Adam Kinzinger the Republican National Committee put out last week, while also directly calling the events of 1/6/2021 a “violent insurrection.” McConnell is not the only one, as Axios reported on 2/7/2022, over 140 different Republican officials have signed a letter condemning both the censure and its characterization of the Storming of the Capitol with the Orwellian term of “legitimate political discourse.”
Much of the media has already discussed this new divide in the Republican Party, but it should be noted that many of the Republican critics of this censure appear to be doing it for reasons other than disagreement. To give an example, on 2/8/2022 Newsweek ran the headline “Every Republican Senator to Condemn Liz Cheney, Adam Kinzinger Censure.” However, forty four of these same Republicans refused to vote in favor of establishing an independent committee to investigate the Storming of the Capitol just last year. Even just basing this off of the Republicans Newsweek mentions, John Cornyn, Shelley Moore Capito, Joni Ernst, Lindsey Graham, Kevin Cramer, and Roy Blunt all refused to vote in favor of an investigation into the events of 1/6/2021, but are now condemning their fellow…
