Colin Powell, the eighty-four year old former Secretary of State, died on 10/18/2021. On his Facebook page, somebody simply identified only as “The Powell Family” wrote:

General Colin L. Powell, former U.S. Secretary of State and Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, passed away this morning due to complications from Covid 19. He was fully vaccinated. We want to thank the medical staff at Walter Reed National Medical Center for their caring treatment. We have lost a remarkable and loving husband, father, grandfather and a great American.

Of course, the fact that Powell died of COVID-19 while being vaccinated confused some people. John Roberts — the Fox News correspondent, not the Supreme Court Justice — tweeted in response to Powell’s death:

The fact that Colin Powell died from a breakthrough COVID infection raises new concerns about how effective vaccines are long-term.

It should be noted that Powell did not just die of COVID-19, he also was undergoing treatment for Multiple myeloma, which greatly compromised his immune system. When Powell turned eighty-four — the age he was when he died — he already had more than a six percent chance of death going in. If anything, it’s inaccurate to call COVID-19 Powell’s cause of death as much as it is to call it his mercy killer.
