Neither Court Nor Congress Nor Media Will Stop Donald Trump

Two events have convinced me that Donald Trump is not going to be held accountable for anything he does — that he really could, as he once bragged, “stand in the middle of Fifth Avenue and shoot somebody” and nobody would care one way or another. Although his thirty-four convictions was a powerful moment in the history of the country, it does not mean anything if those around him are unable to actually deliver consequences.

Although the exact details of the Supreme Court’s 7/1/2024 ruling are still being poured through by legal minds, and many are unsure what precedent it is going to set, one thing is clear: The Supreme Court is of the belief Donald Trump is above the law while serving in the White House. Mind you, although this has never been the official line of reasoning, it is not as if the idea hasn’t been the status quo for multiple decades. After Richard Nixon was nearly imprisoned for his actions during his administration, Republicans have done everything in their power to protect their own from having to deal with the same. Ronald Reagan, the first George Bush, and the second George Bush all did major violations of the law in one form or another, however — and this is an important note — there always existed an implication that the President could, in theory, be punished if the correct legal actions were taken.
