“Moderate Democrats” vs. “Moderate Republicans”

West Virginia Senator Joe Manchin has officially said he will not vote for President Biden’s reconciliation bill. Of course, President Biden has held multiple meetings with Senator Manchin over the past several months specifically in hopes of ironing out issues Manchin has with the bill. However, despite Biden’s many attempts to extend an olive branch to Senator Manchin, Manchin still refuses to vote for Biden’s bill.

Mind you, Joe Manchin saying he’s against the bill is not surprising, and the Biden White House remains optimistic that Manchin will eventually see the light. However, what I want to talk about is a little contradiction I’ve noticed regarding how Democrats are supposed to deal with their “moderate wing” vs. how Republicans deal with their “moderate wing.”

The same day Manchin announced this, Margaret Hoover — a conservative commentator who currently hosts the PBS show Firing Lines — was on Jim Acosta’s show CNN Newsroom. Here’s what Hoover said on Manchin’s recent announcement:

Listen, Joe Manchin is representing not the United States of America. He is not President Manchin. He is Joe Manchin the senator from West Virginia who represents a state that three-quarters of the population voted for Donald Trump. So, Joe, I think the suggestion that he is not doing the centrist thing is actually not fair.
