Liz Cheney Brought This On Herself
Another story has come to my attention during my break that I want to take a minute and talk about. On 8/16/2022, Congresswoman Liz Cheney lost her primary to her Trump-backed challenger, Harriet Hageman, who beat Cheney by nearly forty points. Mind you, during the 2016 Presidential Election Hageman supported Ted Cruz and opposed Donald Trump, but all of that has since been forced down the memory hole.
Given that Republicans have held Liz Cheney’s congressional seat continuously since 1979, it’s basically guaranteed that Hageman is going to win that seat in November. This is because — despite the best efforts of people like Liz Cheney — the Republican Party is fundamentally the party of Donald Trump and those who agree with him. Cheney was the loudest voice in the movement to reform the Republican Party into something that isn’t a cult dedicated to worshipping Donald Trump, and the Republican voters have made it clear her message is not what they want.
While I do certainly respect Liz Cheney for being one of the few Republicans brave enough to call out Donald Trump, I should make it known that, at the end of the day, she’s still a Republican. When she and Trump battled on issues of foreign policy during Trump’s administration, I commonly sided with Trump much more frequently than I sided with her. Although I’ve since grown to view her in a more favorable light in response to her work on the January 6th Committee, I have to admit that I would still never support her politically over even the most basic Democrat.
With that said, it’s worth remembering that Cheney still voted with Donald Trump over ninety percent of the time. Cheney even once argued with Kentucky Senator Rand Paul over who was the bigger supporter of Donald Trump. During Trump’s four years in office, outside of occasional opposition to his foreign policy, Cheney was a Trump Republican when it mattered. Even if she was willing to stand up to Trump after his administration was over, that does nothing other than prove how much of a coward and a grifter she is.
