In Defense Of Labels (But Not The Stigmatization Attached To Them)

A couple of days ago, I was on Twitter, where I saw this Tweet from the well known anti-transgender user @lacroicsz, also known as Helena Kerschner:

[I] feel like part of the reason my generation has such a narrow view of women is because so many of the young women and girls who don’t fit a particular hypersexualized social media stereotype are transitioning or obscuring their womanhood with “non binary” identities.

Ah yes, I remember that episode of My Little Pony: Friendship is Magic where Applejack and Rainbow Dash took up non-binary identities because they weren’t hypersexual.

Helena goes on to write:

[I]f the only people your age you see calling themselves women have only fans and are hyperfeminine, and all the women who don’t are calling themselves boys and agender, it reinforces the belief (on both left and right) that women are this one dimensional performative caricature.

A user named @MissSipLady replied to this conversation with the following:

I think it’s the current generation’s need to affix a label to everything. If something is even slightly outside the norm, there needs to be a diagnosis and a course of action. It’s exhausting! Just be who you are! No need for the over self-reflection.
