Down Goes Madison Cawthorn
Last night, sitting Republican Congressman Madison Cawthorn lost his primary to North Carolina State Senator Chuck Edwards. Cawthorn conceded once it became obvious he had no chance of winning — making him another Trump supporter who will not push for his own claims of election fraud when he’s backed into a corner.
The Republican Party is typically stereotyped as the party of old white men, and this is not without reason. Minorities, women, and young people are all much more likely to vote Democrat than Republican — and Republicans are very aware of this. However, with the rise of youth movements in the later part of the 2010’s — both David Hogg’s pro-gun control activism after the school shooting in Parkland, Florida in 2018 and twenty-nine year old Alexandra Ocasio-Cortez beating ten term incumbent and House Democrat big wig Joe Crowley that same year come to mind — Republicans realized they had to do something to capture that youth energy.
Madison Cawthorn was twenty five years old when he was first elected to the House of Representatives in 2020 — the youngest you can constitutionally be and still get elected. I mention this because I believe Cawthorn was only elected because of the pure novelty.
