Does The Pro-Life Movement Ever Give Up?
Alabama seems to be at it again, now, Alabama Republicans have introduced legislation to ban all abortion in the state. This is clearly ridiculous, after all, even the laws Roe v. Wade struck down allowed an exception for the life of a mother.
The legislation is, of course, filled with nonsense proving that, like most pro-life legislation, it seems like nothing more than a rant that people have to take seriously. Although, the most revealing thing is how it doesn’t actually punish women, just doctors. But wait, I thought women who got abortions were “baby killers,” after all, that’s what they were screaming just a decade or two ago. I guess that’s what happens when you made your war on women so obvious that not insulting women seems like an improvement.
Not only that, but an amendment to the bill that would allow abortion in the case of rape (where the woman never had a choice) was tabled because this is not supposed to be a real legislation. It is yet another attempt to force a court case on abortion that would go there way, which hasn’t worked the last many times they’ve done it.
Here’s a quote from the bill:
Abortion advocates speak to women’s rights, but they ignore the unborn child, while medical science has increasingly recognized the humanity of the unborn child. Recent medical advances prove a baby’s heart starts to heartbeat fetal Doppler can detect a fetal heartbeat as early as 13 weeks.
Can somebody tell me what an “abortion advocate” is exactly? No one wants abortion to happen. No one sits there and thinks “you know what I love, abortion.” Nobody has a happy coat hanger dance. We are pro-choice, as in you can choose to have an abortion. Even ignoring the men who can’t have an abortion, many women who are pro-choice themselves say they would never have an abortion.
But allow me to explain the problem with this logic, unborn children have no rights. Just as I have no right to come into your house just because I could die in the rainstorm outside. This is called property rights, if you do not believe in this, you are, by definition, a socialist.
For that matter, the amount of pain a fetus can feel during an abortion isn’t even all that great. As Richard Dawkins pointed out in The God Delusion, even assuming the fetus has formed enough to feel pain, it still would not compare to the pain felt by a cow in a slaughterhouse.
It is estimated that 6,000,000 Jewish people were murdered in German concentration camps during World War II; 3,000,000 people were executed by Joseph Stalin’s regime in Soviet gulags; 2,500,000 people were murdered during the Chinese “Great Leap Forward” in 1958; 1,500,000 to 3,000,000 people were murdered by the Khmer Rouge in Cambodia during the 1970s; and approximately 1,000,000 people were murdered during the Rwandan genocide in 1994. All of these are widely acknowledged to have been crimes against humanity. By comparison, more than 50 million babies have been aborted in the United States since the Roe decision in 1973, more than three times the number who were killed in German death camps, Chinese purges, Stalin’s gulags, Cambodian killing fields, and the Rwandan genocide combined.
Here’s a fun fact, did you know South American countries that ban abortion have the same rate of abortions per capita as the United States. Except, because they’re done in the back ally, it’s more likely for a woman to be made infertile (meaning she won’t ever have children) in those countries than in the United States.
Although I must say, this sounds like the most pleasant “crime against humanity” in history. After all, this could easily be stopped if women simply stopped having abortions.
Here’s what Republican State Representative Terri Collins had to say on the bill:
The heart of this bill is to confront a decision that was made by the courts in 1973 that said the baby in the womb is not a person. This bill addresses that one issue. Is that baby in the womb a person? I believe our law says it is.
I’m sure the people of Alabama want to see politicians waste money through court cases instead of doing their jobs. For that matter, notice the cheat they’re using. As I’ve covered previously, pro-lifers love to compare themselves to abolitionists, so why not try to amend the constitution. Is it because you’ve tried before and it hasn’t worked because most people aren’t pro-authoritarian like you guys are.
Democrat John Rogers pointed out the stupidity on this legislation, his reasoning is as follows:
It ought to be a woman’s choice. . . . Some kids are unwanted. So you kill them now or you kill them later. You bring them into the world unwanted, unloved, then send them to the electric chair.
This got a lot of hate from pro-lifers, but nothing he said was wrong. Children who are unwanted are much more likely to turn to crime, drugs, and suicide than children who aren’t. I’m just going to assume if a mother wanted to abort the child, he would count as unloved.
Once again, and it can not be said enough, pro-lifers do not understand reality.
